Une couturière en train de travailler à l'atelier couture de PSE

The sewing workshop trains and employs 35 people. And some of them are the parents of children supported by PSE.

At PSE, destitution to a vocation does not only concern children but also their parents as accelerated vocational training is also provided to them.

Established in a large recently rehabilitated warehouse at PSE, about thirty female and male tailors are working with sewing machines to produce the PSE students' uniforms for the next school year. "We create between 15,000 and 16,000 uniforms per year as each student receives two uniforms at the beginning of the year" explains Soparith Kong, manager of PSE sewing workshop. "But we also make uniforms for some of our employees such as guards, canteen staff, mechanics, etc."

Express training from 3 to 6 months

To learn how to make those uniforms, our tailors joined the program dedicated to PSE families' living conditions. Created in 2011 in partnership with the Italian NGO We World, the "FLIP" program (Familiy Livelihood Improvement Program) allows parents of our students to pursue a free and quick training from 3 to 6 months in sewing, house cleaning or cooking. Those parents, from extremely modest backgrounds, are supported by our teams to find a decent job or to set up their own business. Some of them can also be hired at PSE sewing workshop. "They continue their training and are properly remunerated for their work" adds Sopharith Kong.

For decent working conditions

PSE guarantees to tailors fixed working hours from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in a secure workshop, as well as health insurance and remuneration above the industry average. "The sewing workshop is a continuation of Papy and Mamie's mission [Christian and Marie-France des Pallières, founders of PSE]" explains Soparith Kong. "Parents get well-paid jobs close to home that allows them to support their families and send their children to school nearby. Thanks to schedules, they also have time to take care of their home."

And more fair collections

Since 2013, the sewing workshop is no longer only in charge of uniforms production as PSE has developed it own collection, Le Cartable de Chenda. It is sold in our shop in Phnom Penh and made from scrap fabric from students' uniforms and Krama, the traditional Cambodian fabric.

More recently, the workshop has developed partnerships with external companies, such as The Extra Smile. This Singaporean ethical kids fashion company works only with fair textile workshops. "When we launched our brand two years ago, we were looking for fair partners who were 100% transparent about the way they work", explains Samantha Thouret, co-founder of The Extra Smile. "We wanted to know the employees' salaries, their working conditions and if children were hired, for example. And we discovered PSE! We share the same moral, educational and social values!".

The Extra Smile supplies the fabrics and patterns to the sewing workshop and the sewing workshop sends back the orders when they are finished. "We are really delighted to be working with PSE. The finishes are more and more made carefully and there is a real effort not to lose so much fabric during the making. This is really important when we know the textile industry is the second most polluting in the world" concludes Samantha Thouret.
